Nerstrand Elementary School Faces Challenges Due To Lower Enrollment

Posted

At a public meeting earlier in October, Nicole Musoff, Executive Director of the Nerstrand Elementary School discussed the challenges the school is facing due to lower enrollment this year. While there has traditionally been a waiting list at the school in years past, coming out of the pandemic this year saw lower enrollment numbers than planned. As a result of the lower student numbers, this has left the school needing to make some tough decisions in order to weather the financial situation this year.

Several fundraising efforts are under way for the school, and over $15,000 of additional funds were raised this month following the public meeting and discussion. In the meeting, administration and the community were able to discuss potential opportunities for the school.  The school will continue working to increase enrollment to pre-pandemic levels, along with other outreach to the area.  In the interim,  due to the financial challenges facing the school this year, several staff cuts were made including two special special education paraprofessionals, the music position, and one general education teacher. Staff cuts were based on seniority. Administration is focused on not only delivering a good education to the current students, but building enrollment numbers back up and bringing staff back.  Fundraising efforts continue. If anyone in the community wishes to assist in these efforts, please reach out to Executive Director Musolf at the school. The Schools direct line is 507-333-6854.
